Wednesday, Nov. 1st, 2017, Hilton Head Library
PRESENTER: Kitty Ferguson has been writing and lecturing about scientists and science for 25 years, making the language and concepts of physics and cosmology understandable for a wide range of readers. Her 1991 biography, STEPHEN HAWKING: QUEST FOR A THEORY OF EVERYTHING, was an international bestseller. She lives in Cambridge, U.K., and Hilton Head Island.
Ms. Ferguson suggested four broad answers to the topic of the day:
How Did Human Beings Come to Have a Sense of Morality and Ethics?
Then Ms. Ferguson added the idea that the laws of human behavior may be “hierarchical” just as the laws of science are – the continuum from Newton to Einstein to quantum gravity resembling Jesus’s stating which are the first and greatest commandments and that the others follow from these. We may never know bedrock morality. She concluded by telling the personal story about correcting her son for cheating on a school assignment: although the case might not seem to him as big and exciting as the "Star Wars" battles between good and evil, the most important battles between good and evil are fought in the small places!
From the audience:
Thanks to Kitty for an excellent, well-researched presentation which generated an enthusiastic discussion, to John Miller for moderating., and to Fran Bollin for providing this professional, well-condensed summary of our meeting.
